RESUMO

A 7-month-old intact female Persian cat was diagnosed with symblepharon accompanied by epiphora, brownish ocular discharge, and ocular discomfort in the left eye. Superficial keratectomy (SK) was performed to remove adhesions between the conjunctiva and cornea. To prevent re-adhesion after SK, the detached conjunctival tissue was sutured to the corneal limbus, and a soft contact lens (SCL) was inserted and a partial temporary tarsorrhaphy was performed. The SCL and tarsorrhaphy sutures were maintained for 22 days, and symblepharon did not recur 347 days postoperatively. SK combined with SCL is a relatively easy and cost-effective surgical option for feline symblepharon.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two types of bandage contact lenses on the healthy canine eye. ANIMALS STUDIED: Six healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Two different types of bandage contact lenses (single sized human silicone contact lens 'PureVision 2' (Bausch & Lomb Incorporated, Rochester, NY, USA) and specially designed veterinary hydrogel contact lens 'AcriVet Pat D' (Bausch & Lomb Incorporated) were placed in 12 eyes of healthy Beagle dogs. Retention times and the effects of the lenses regarding irritation of the eye, changes in tear production, impact of contact lenses on tonometric readings, and cytologic and microbiological alterations of the canine eye were investigated. RESULTS: Mean retention times for veterinary hydrogel lenses with special dimensions were significantly shorter (2 days) than for one size human silicon lenses (8.8 days). Irritation scores were overall low for both types of lenses apart from one human lens causing severe irritation and keratoconjunctivitis as a sequel to folding and displacement. Tear production remained stable in human contact lenses. Intraocular pressure readings with a contact lens in place were only slightly altered; the most accurate readings were obtained through a human lens with an applanation tonometer. Cytology revealed a slight, nonsignificant increase in neutrophilic granulocytes with both types of lenses; the microflora did not change significantly. DISCUSSION: Human silicone lenses have significantly longer retention times and are less expensive than veterinary hydrogel lenses. In regard to irritation, bacterial growth and inflammation, both types of lenses can be recommended for use in canine eyes.

The aim of this study was to analyze for 120 days, post-operative complications following bimanual phacoemulsification with implantation of hydrophilic or hydrophobic intraocular acrylic lens. The hospital records of 15 dogs were analyzed, and distributed in two groups, being Gfi and Gfo the hydrophilic intraocular lens and hydrophobic intraocular lens group, respectively. On the first day, both groups presented blepharospasm, conjunctival hyperemia and flare. On day 1, fibrin was slightly apparent in two and three eyes of Gfi and Gfo, and on day 7, present in one and two patients from Gfi and Gfo. Synechia was observed on day 1 in one eye from Gfi and Gfo. Two eyes from Gfi developed from 7 to 120 days, and in Gfo, one eye developed from 7 to 90 days, on day 120, two eyes formed them. The presence of posterior capsule opacity of the lens in all periods, there was no statistical significant between the groups. Only one eye, in Gfo, that had no opacity formation. The intraocular pressure of both groups remained within normal range. There was no statistical significance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic intraocular lens, the use of intraocular lens has led to satisfactory results in visual ability.(AU)


Objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar por 120 dias as complicações após a facoemulsificação bimanual com implantação de lentes acrílicas hidrofílicas ou hidrofóbicas. Os prontuários de 15 cães foram avaliados, sendo distribuídos em dois grupos, Gfi e Gfo, grupos com lentes intraoculares hidrofílicas e com lentes hidrofóbicas, respectivamente. No primeiro dia, ambos os grupos apresentaram blefarospasmo, hiperemia conjuntiva e flare. No dia 1, fibrina foi discretamente observada em dois e três olhos do Gfi e Gfo; no dia 7, observou-se em um e três olhos nos pacientes do Gfi e Gfo. Foi observada sinéquia no dia 1 em um olho do Gfi e do Gfo; em dois olhos do Gfi ocorreu do dia 7 ao dia 120. No Gfo apenas um olho teve sinéquia do dia 7 ao dia 90, contudo aos 120 dias, dois olhos formaram-na. A opacidade de cápsula posterior da lente esteve presente em todos os períodos, não havendo diferença estatística entre os grupos. Somente um olho, do Gfo, não teve formação de opacidade. A pressão intraocular foi normal em ambos os grupos. Não houve diferença estatística entre as lentes hidrofílicas e hidrofóbicas. O uso de lentes intraoculares apresentaram resultados satisfatórios na acuidade visual.(AU)

Therapeutic soft contact lenses (TSCLs) are frequently used to support or protect the cornea during healing. Our aim was to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of topical medications in TSCL-fitted dogs and determine whether it is affected by the presence of TSCLs. In Phase I, pupil diameter was measured in eyes treated with tropicamide and in eyes covered with TSCLs and then treated with tropicamide, with 1-week intervals between sessions. In Phase II, intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured in uncovered and TSCL-covered eyes treated with latanoprost, with 1-week intervals between sessions. Tropicamide caused significant mydriasis in both uncovered and TSCL-covered eyes (P = 0.005). On the other hand, latanoprost caused a significant decrease in IOP when applied to uncovered eyes (P = 0.002), but had no significant effect on IOP when applied to TSCL-covered eyes (P = 0.7). As we used the same dogs and identical TSCLs throughout the study, we conclude that the different outcomes of the two drugs are due to properties of the drugs themselves, or their formulations, affecting their interaction with the TSCLs. The clinical efficacy of topical drugs applied to TSCL-covered eyes may have to be determined for each drug and/or formulation.

A four-year-old, 1·3-kg entire male Holland Lop pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented with a two-day history of bilateral epiphora and blepharospasm. Fluorescein staining revealed bilateral medio-ventral corneal ulceration. Initial topical treatment included ophthalmic broad-spectrum antibiotics and artificial tear solutions. Over a six-month period, antibiotics were changed based on corneal culture and sensitivity test results, and periodic corneal debridement was performed. With little to no improvement, and recurrence of the previous clinical signs, surgical intervention was considered but withheld because of individual pet consideration and owner's reluctance. Hydrophilic contact lenses were placed for corneal support but failed and caused a severe ocular response. Corneal collagen shields were placed bilaterally in order to promote corneal healing. Recheck examination performed seven days after placement revealed complete resolution of the ulcer in one eye and major reduction of the corneal ulcer in the contra-lateral eye.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured by use of Mackay-Marg applanation tonometry in 8 normal, manometrically controlled, enucleated, canine eyes with and without 1 of 2 plano therapeutic soft contact lenses (1 and 2) covering the cornea. Differences were not significant between measurements made without a contact lens and those made through either lens at manometer IOP < 30 mm of Hg. At manometer IOP > or = 30 mm of Hg, use of a contact lens tended to result in a statistically greater (P < 0.05) estimate of IOP than when a lens was not used. This difference, however, achieved only a maximum of 2.6 mm of Hg at the 80 mm of Hg value, and was not regarded as clinically important. Measurements obtained through lens 1 were not significantly different from those obtained through lens 2. The IOP can be accurately estimated in dogs, using the Mackay-Marg tonometer, without removing either type of bandage soft contact lens, thereby avoiding potential disruption of an already compromised cornea.

RESUMO

The authors have designed and produced extended-wear contact lenses for rhesus monkeys. High-plus lenses to correct neonatal aphakia as well as lenses dyed black for use as occluders to treat amblyopia have been evaluated. Four infant monkeys fitted with soft lenses have successfully worn these extended-wear lenses almost continuously throughout their first year of life. These experiments demonstrate that rhesus monkeys tolerate extended-wear contact lenses well when these lenses are correctly designed, comfortably fitted, and their wear carefully monitored. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that usable levels of vision can be maintained in monocularly aphakic infant monkeys. Since similar methods are now used to treat children with monocular cataracts, our animal model using extended-wear contact lenses on young monkeys should facilitate new and clinically relevant amblyopia experiments.
